Coral

Coral is the exoskeleton of colonial polyps, small animals that live in the sea. Coral has been known to mankind since Paleolithic times as it was found with Paleolithic remains. Coral was popular with Greeks and Romans and Pliny has recorded trade between India and the Mediterranean countries in first century AD.

Coral in Greek mythology originated with Medusa's death at the hands of Perseus; the drops of her blood became red coral. Romans believed that it would protect their children from danger and used it as a cure for scorpian and serpant bites.

Though gem coral is traditionally red, the red ranges through orange to pink and even white. It also comes as black, golden and even a rare grey blue.

Points to remember:
  • The lengthwise striped or patterned skeletal structure to their branches distinguishes all corals from imitations.
  • Coral's color, size, and polish determine its value.
  • Pale rose and deep red are the most valued.
  • Large pieces are rare and large, fine carvings command high prices.
  • Average price of a Coral Gem should be $5 per carat.
